I don’t know if this make any sense or it’s incomplete but…. The sign is darker in the bottom part than the upper part. Thunder and moon are the symbols that are darker than the rest. “Thunder Moon” is a traditional native american name for the Full Moon of July, the 7th month of the year. Maybe the other two symbols mean the number three?

The “sacrificial tripod” has HAT. We sacrifice these 3 letters.
Find the other hat and what its touching.
=> HEART – HAT = ER

Put the ER in THESEV… to get THREE.SEV…
Its spelling THREE SEVEN going off the page, and door 37 is correct.

Heard/sound are clues to switch SOME with SUM.
The door was slammed where they BOLTed away. SUM where the bolt is. Under the bolt symbol sum the vertical lines. Theres a clear group of 3 followed by a clear group of 7.
Later it says ” suddenly moved to say” which can also be BOLTed, followed by “some comb-ination”, and the lines coming out of the bolt are like teeth of a comb.

Getting the letter “H” for the path from this room:

“Char-ity” as in characters. The eighth character is H and the text emphasises 8 three times. In the list of 5 heros on the wall only three have H in them.

When I was actively thinking about this last (2018, when I found this site) I felt strongly like clues pointed to Loki being the Guide. As a trickster and shapeshifter a lot of the other clues that seem contradictory could still point to him. But the duality of Janus also makes some sense, especially if the solution lies in the face above the center door in room 43, with two figures bookending a face and the numbers 22 above them (I have a hard time accepting that there’s a Minotaur face there). Janus would fit into your dual persona theme.

I’d like to acknowledge whoever I saw suggest Janus already, but there’s so many comments I’m not sure I can find it again.

It doesn’t seem plausible that the moon and stars are anywhere meant to be combined to make approximate a phonetic similarity to “monster.” The moon naturally appears alongside stars in the real world, and the moon/star emblem in room 2 is a real-world symbol. This makes it quite a leap to find a moon and a star in proximity and interpret them as an imperfect rebus for a metaphor that oould apparently apply to most doors.

The leaning placard has a crescent moon and the tripod table supports form a star, “moon “star” = monster? with the lightning bolt on the placard pointing to door 3 which is in the loop. Could it be kind of a lesser indicator to not take door 3? By lesser I mean not nearly as strong as the moon and star (monster) picture of room 2 that clearly indicates to not take door 22 which is a trap room.

Very little of the book has been addressed in any official capacity. What little information was released by the publisher related to the contest solutions, and besides the answers themselves it leaves a lot of the reasoning behind the solutions opaque. Hence, 30+ years of increasingly deranged speculation.

some of these solutions are bordering on the ridiculous and seem like overly contrived retrospective fitting onto the known solution. Isn’t there an official answer book or article by the author to sort out which of the clues actually were supposed to mean anything?

I’m still laughing at the person who suggested that the apple tree in one of the previous rooms “was 2D hence supposed to be number 2″. You’re having a laugh, frankly.

I do think the sign with the bird, cloud, moon and thunderbolt is just meant to indicate “things in the sky.” We took a wrong turn by trying to read the shadows for answers.

More simply, the door to 30 has “sun” (“svn” technically, but you get it) on it, and the tripod in front of it forms a star pattern with its crossbars at the specific angle we’re looking at it.

Note also that the tripod’s crossbars are actually three Xs going around the legs–XXX, or 30. (In other words, X, X, and X, in a “specific combination,” relate to 30. Note that the Guide mentions the relationship between numbers while leaning on the tripod.)

It’s been noted before that the numbers mentioned in the text sum to 7–that fact can be read in various ways regarding this room.

Interestingly, though, if we take that as an invitation to compare with Room 7 (which is a bit of a leap, I acknowledge) we find a couple of interesting things:

1) The placement of the poster with names of heroes, pinned to the wall and slightly blowing (curling?) up at the bottom, corresponds to the placement of the poster in 7, which is pinned to the wall and blowing or curling up at the bottom

2) The placement of the crudely drawn house in 15 corresponds to the placement of the crudely drawn face in 7
