BREAKING NEWS
After figuring out "DUNKEL" letter by letter and introducing the German language, I underwent my "Aha" moment: Besides "Abyss", 24 can also be called "hell" (many items in 11 even rhymes or quasi-rhymes with "hell": the "bell", the "nails" resembling eyes in 24 ...). And what's the meaning of "hell" in the German language?
It's "bright"! The exact antonym of "DUNKEL"!
I don't know if Christopher Manson knows the German language.
But anyway, before this moment, I was afraid of the number 24 even IRL; from now on, 24 means to me "seemingly unlimited darkness that can eventually suddenly turn bright for the enough-thoughtful".
Just as Manson's name suggests, when "I" is away from the "mansion", there's nothing to be fear.
If he does know the German language and this is intended, I would say that he is who ascended this common and negligible "faux amie" to an "awe-ful" "a-ha" or (here astonishingly appropriate) "WTH" moment.
End with a poem by modern Chinese poet Gu Cheng that the then contemporary Christopher probably doesn't know:

O dark eyes grants me, you pitch dark night,
which I will use as I seek for light.

The pose of the ape is suggestive of the different eye looking left here. We learn from our first class, the "different" object leads to the answer.

I have a theory to actually "solve" the abyss (but involving non-English language knowledge, which may be considered cheating).
The four doors leading here (invisible here) are actually from rooms 4, 11, 14 and 21 respectively, which can form letters D, K, N and U, that can make the word DUNK ... with no use. But, here's where the light is:
What thing IRL has the similar character of converging things from everywhere one-way with no exit? The "sea"! (Also hinted by the "SEE!" & "no escape" in 38; and it's deeply connected to the Earth/World/Globe, the solution of the Puzzle of the Maze) This would make a C; and since letter-number connections are used in other letters, use that on C you get 3, and investigate room 3, it's a flipped room, so you flip the 3 itself to get a letter (in the font of "nine" in 3): E. And as someone pointed out, the word "dozens" seems awkward here, while 24 itself is a "dozens" number (more on it later) but it may also suggest what a "dozen" itself means, 12 or L. (Also suggested by the missing "L" on "WOMANSJEWELLRY" in 22. Or if you investigate room 12, there is a door, next to the fork, to 24/12=2, 2 itself being on one hand with a one-way door back to 22 also with a large fork, on the other hand has frescoes of "warfare" that indicates we might consider a language stereotypically associated with warfare.) Combining the letters we have now, we can now form: DUNKEL, which is the German word for "dark". Alternatively, you could separate "dozens" into "dozen"(12 or L) and "S" (suggested by the 19 pairs of eyes here; also the "pair" room 42 has "SAINTS / SINNERS" and has a door with "scissors" to trap room 22 with the missing L), find the unlucky numbered room 13 (the reason it's unlucky is the same reason why "dozen" comes into living), and notice the missing "second", or "SEKUNDE" in German (for the time unit only; the ordinal number is "zweite"). Replace the S with an L, omit one E (where the most likely way to 3, from 33, also omits a 3 or E, more suggested by the "EE" original layout and the door 9 looking like an arabian number 3 and a roman numeral 3 emeared or crossed off, to find a word with to E's and omit one), into and flip the word (letter for letter now) and we also get "DUNKEL". This abyss room also has some WWII metaphor, itself pointing to the German language ... This may be my answer to potentially solve the abyss, lying one layer deeper than even the riddle of the maze, just as the abyss room itself being geographically at least one layer deeper than any other room. Just as trap room 22's "red herring" indicates, to finally solve the abyss, should we consider the fact that there are no visible doors, the scene itself being jump-scary, and all the "rooms' geographical connections" leading to all these facts, as "red herrings"? We are after all 3D creatures superior to the 2D book "MAZE"; The logic links with which I try to solve the abyss involves randomly jumping from page to page, room to room, sometimes ignoring their actual geographic links in-book, which is - treating those all as red herrings - the priority of us IRL. To conclude, when you think out of the box, you are out of the box, at any time you want.

Except that I even don't conclude now. We have the WWII metaphor and we start with letters DUNK, which place do you think of? And when you explore and compare the skeleton key of the trap, with the skeleton key of the loop and the latter's exit outside (metaphorically those directly above us), we get "9 to 18", or I to R. On the way getting "DUNKEL", We just exploited loop room 3 (even something about the sphinx that, as night after evening symbolises the "man"'s "death", midnight or 24:00 is the death of a day, but also 0:00 or reborn outside the book of another day / another life; 24-hour format suggested in 13), which is above trap room 11. When we decend that back to 11 ,,, at the word's end, at the "book's end", and C and K sound the end of the word ... (Knowing the importance of "S" in the last layer's alternative explanation, even the "extra S" in room 20, near the exit of the path could be a clue to this "end" suggestion ... We have the "extra small" size "XS" for clothing, and this may indicate "remember those "S"(19) guys entrapped in room "X"(24)? Don't just think of yourself, think "deeply"!) we get another "K"（the "bell" in 11 can be seen as "be 11", which is tautological at first glance, but can also be used as late as now to get this "K"） ... All of these point to ... DUNKIRK. I would think this as the final layer I figure out: DUNKEL is just the state of this room, and DUNKIRK is the action, the actual way out - those who can think clearly even in so terrifying darkness, are those who retreat from Dunkirk alive, waiting to from a larger group and the eventual revenge against the Guide (the enforcement of revenge already covered by others somewhere in this website, I would not repeat, but "be 11" is the first step). (Which is also the moral of "the Old Man and the Sea", a deeply-lying message of room 3 when we go as "meta" as here)

P.S. When looking for my nickname here I even realize that the appropriate article word in German here is spelt "die" and is the word that does cause kids frightening in German-speaking countries lol
P.P.S Still hate that every time I update something here, however minor, I would get repeatedly jumpscared once I click the "Update" button

It's mysterious, alright, and maybe impossible to answer without understanding the role of the Maze itself. Repeated underworld references suggest this is some corner of Hades if not Hell, and for countless visitors to persist living in the void of 24, it does seem like they must be something other than normal living people.

If the Minotaur is a judge of the dead, as 22 suggests, who would have granted him such authority? Why? His Maze isn't any kind of moral judgment; did Hades want a test of wits incorporated into his kingdom for some reason?

Perhaps not, and perhaps this is just the Minotaur acting on his own, with some kind of mystical, spiritual, afterlife powers. He imitates his father by acting as a judge of the dead, but he has no actual sense of justice or concern for morality.

Then again, it only says "dozens of eyes." That's not very many people. And "unlimited darkness" may not mean to say literally that this is some extra-spatial, infinite expanse. It might just mean it's dark all around and always. And these might just be the recent victims of the Minotaur.

Is that a possibility worth considering? Could the Maze exist not in a mythological afterlife, but on a mythological Earth?

Oh, no, probably not, because the Minotaur died.

For sure. I think it’s easy to forget just how disturbing it is to be a kid and unexpectedly encounter it for the first time.
The text also implies that it’s a kind of purgatory. It lays bare the impossible geometry of the maze (no doors, unlimited space?) and yet describes the room as “crowded.” We were talking about House of Leaves earlier, and the existential dread of this room definitely gets invoked a lot in it. (Starting Only Revolutions, by the way! And ohhh boy you weren’t kidding about it, haha)
I wonder what function this room might play in-universe… some sort of revenge fantasy where we’re isolated like the minotaur was made to be?

It's certainly merciful, in the manner you describe. 24 could have just had a door to, say, 35, and then you could go around in circles forever.

I suspect 24 is included more for aesthetic reasons than puzzle design. Given Manson's desire to paint the Guide as sinister, his Maze needs to do something worse than just waste your time.
