Another clue suggesting that door 7 is the right choice is the room’s theme: music, represented by the two musicians playing western instruments.

in western music, there are 7 natural notes: A, B, C, D, E, F and G. The other notes are flat or sharps, in other words, intervals situated between the natural notes.

To reinforce this point, it is worth noting that most musical scales use 7 notes to define a song’s feeling. For example, the dorian scale, mixolydian scale, or the Phrygian scale.

P.S.: In my native language (spanish), we also use 7 natural notes, but with different names: Do (C), Re (D), Mi (E), Fa (F), Sol (G), La (A) and Si (B).

vewatkin is right. Let’s not be silly and assume there are no rules to this game. If there weren’t, we might as well just teleport straight to room 45 whenever we pleased and call it a day, especially given how many probably unintended things people find all the time when closely examining Maze.
Walton, if you have still not solved it yet, I offer you this piece of advice: when you, after a long and hazardous journey, reach a point in the House where EVERYTHING seems to indicate there MUST be something important here…there likely is. And the way to the solution is through what some might call a fourth wall break, or what others might call just outside-the-box thinking. Not so outside-the-box that it involves passing through an unmarked door, though.

There are no explicit, established rules at all with this book. That was my main point of frustration. In fact, even here people disagree about what constitutes a clue. Even the idea that a “correct” answer to a riddle leads you to death is strange so I’m going to go ahead and look for doors wherever I think fits. My solution lets you get back to the part so surely that suggests it has validity.

The f holes on the viola as I said, look like 19. The left one really lacks a round bit at the bottom. And F holes are almost all with symmetrical top to bottom so it’s unusual for that right one to look so much like a nine.

I have found this book impossible for years. I had absolutely no idea what to look for at all. But I stumbled on your website and read your guide which helped me a great deal. I stopped at overview of the maze, because I didn’t want to have too many spoilers. But at the beginning, you say the key is to find a hidden door to room 17. That led me to believe that the unnumbered doors can be used. Because how else could a door possibly be hidden?

You can’t go through unnumbered exits. Those are one-way passages.

However, if you could, this room would connect directly to 45 and 26, meaning you’d be 1 step away from the center, and 2 steps away from the entrance. A useful shortcut indeed! Alas.

I came to this room in my first steps after discovering that there could be numbers for the unnumbered doors. And I’ve already discovered 7 and 16 were wrong. So I looked for an alternative. The guide to praises the viol, not the viol player. The F holes on the viol look like 19. The neck of the viol is pointing to the only broken arch. So I say 19 is the solution and it is the only actual way out.
