Gormenghast is more than just a really big castle, it spreads out like modern metrolopolis, far bigger than is necessary for the civilization living within its walls. It is a labyrinth of passages and towers spreading over the landscape. Gormenghast has moved far beyond its original purpose (to protect those within from attack) and has become the entire world for those within. It is a maze so vast that those within have almost forgotten that there is anything else.
